The end of the year is full of celebration (of what was accomplished in 2013), contemplation (of learning and things that did not quite measure up) and anticipation (of what to do better/differently in 2014). But how do we channel these insights and energy into a set of positive actions?
Over the years I have come to experience the power of creating regular roadmaps for my business (and for other companies). By roadmap, I mean a simple (often one page) plan that charts out the main initiatives for the year, along with a detailed list of tactical steps that ensure I am making progress.
Why a roadmap?
- Roadmaps are easy to understand and communicate. For yourself, your team, and anyone else interested in the success of your business, you can quickly communicate what your growth plan is for the upcoming year. I find that roadmaps are even more important in a few weeks when the team is bombarded with customer requests, partner opportunities and cost pressures. What do you say “no” to? By looking at your roadmap, everyone stays focused on the top few initiatives.
- You start with the destination. With any roadmap, you first need to decide where you are going. And everyone needs to be onboard.
- You can only go as far as your vehicle and fuel will take you. While we would all love to have a rocket ship or tele-transporter, most of us are driving small, sometimes clunky vehicles. Realistic roadmaps are charted taking into account your budget and staffing.
- You have flexibility in changing your route. You can detour quickly as you encounter roadblocks along the way.
- With a good dashboard, you will stay on course. As important as the roadmap is your set of metrics for making sure you are making progress toward your destination. Part of the roadmap creation process is identifying which gauges need to be working, and regularly monitored.
